China is very strict on censoring the internet with the use of firewalls. Although in the past, Chinese officials have not interrupted Gmail and other foreign email services. However recently, Chinese official’s internet censorship has grown even tighter with more firewalls. The Chinese government does all of this in an attempt to curb any civil unrest at home. Officials have even targeted Google’s e-mail service, Gmail. China claims that problems accessing Gmail is because of Google. Google has stated that there is nothing wrong with Gmail but that China is censoring and tampering with Gmail. Even private VPN’s used for private access to blocked websites, some for corporate use, have been disrupted by Chinese government interference.

We have recently seen increased government involvement controlling the internet around the world yet we constantly read that this is not feasible in the US. How is the government able to control the internet so tightly in China? If a revolt starts in China, possibly it will be labeled the "Google Revolt" rather than just the "Jasmine Revolution."
